Writing out Scales

1. Write the letter names of the scale - starting and ending with the scale letter name. For instance, if you are trying to figure out the "D Scale", start with the letter D and write D E F G A B C D

2. Figure out how many sharps or flats are in that scale by checking your key signature chart. The key of D has two sharps according to the chart.

3. Figure out what the sharps or flats are. Since you already determined that D has two sharps, use the phrase Fat Cows Graze Daily to determine that the two sharps would be F (Fat) and C (Cows).

4. Write in the sharps/flats after the appropriate letter in your scale. You would add a sharp after the letters F and C in your scale. The final answer would be: D E F# G A B C# D . Remember - always write the sharp AFTER the letter name when using actual letters - write it like you would read it: F-# (F - sharp).
